Having been there and done the catastrophic thing I may be a little on the paranoid side but nevertheless I recommend saving all email to a designated folder with internal subfolders, on the main (usually C:) drive in either plain text or, with emails for which that option isn't available (like Lockergnome publications), html files. The html files can later be opened in your browser for viewing. Links will be clickable, images will be in place, and the file can even be emailed again, via Tools, Mail & News. Email saved as plain text files takes up less space on the hard drive can later be read with any plain text editor, like Windows Notepad but I recommend Metapad because it will render links, in a plain text email, as clickable. http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/ Hope for Linux users who've lost their TV, stereo, or other remote control units *grin*. http://www.lirc.org/ A nice looking Windows utility. http://www.fxsearch.com/ldw_eng/ Rube Goldberg machine competition. http://www.rube-goldberg.com/ Recollections of Old Manoa (Hawaii). http://www.malamaomanoa.org/index.html Their English is less than perfect but you'll find some interesting apps on this Polish site. http://marbit.com.pl/en_index.htm The wit and wisdom of Mark Twain. http://www.seniormag.com/whitt/mark_twain.htm A few Windows utilities, and one for Mac, from McDaniel Development. http://www.mcdev.com/index.php?page=Software Medieval writing. http://medievalwriting.50megs.com/ While I've mentioned his site before, I've yet to find another paint utility I like as well as Matthew Allen's i.Mage (I'm fairly certain that it should be pronounced "eye-mage") and there are other interesting apps on his site as well. http://www.memecode.com/ I catch a little flack from the guys in the computer club because I distrust and dislike Microsoft so, in self defense, I found a few folks who tend to agree with me. http://www.vanwensveen.nl/rants/microsoft/IhateMS.html http://www.ka9q.net/worm/ http://www.twoengineers.com/Richard/microsoft.html http://software.silicon.com/os/0,39024651,39123183,00.htm http://www.iscnetwork.com/winblows/GottaLoveMS-NOT.htm http://dotmac.info/articles/9475 http://www.brokenclaw.com/views/why_ms.html http://homepage.mac.com/shentzu/dmoz/hatems.html http://snipurl.com/ksjd Midi resources. http://www.classicalarchives.com/index.html http://www.jayp.net/jukebox/ Mitchell Rose's videos would probably take a prohibitively long time to load on a dial-up connection but some of them are worth the wait if you have the time. http://www.mitchellrose.com/home.html A (costless) educational math game and logic puzzle for all ages. http://www.kprobe.com/kprobe/mu.htm Shaun O'Boyle's 'Modern Ruins' photographic essays. http://www.oboylephoto.com/ruins/index.htm Molecular Expressions, exploring the microverse. http://micro.magnet.fsu.edu/index.html An odd little site. http://www.monkeyfood.com/ A helpful site if your Canadian and planning to move soon. http://www.movingto.com/freeinfo.asp A couple of nifty mp3 tools. http://www.mpesch3.de/ WYSIWYG web editing for Windows, Mac or Linux. http://www.nvu.com/ For sailboaters. http://home.att.net/~oday/index.htm Vintage aviation buffs. http://www.oldethymeaviation.com/ A couple of awesome resources for guitarists. http://www.olga.net/ http://tabalorium.com/ The official web site of The O'Malley Clan Association. http://www.omalley-clan.org/index.htm An electronic Eugene O'Neill Archive. http://www.eoneill.com/ Pinging lets dozens of services know you've updated your site and increases traffic to your blog. http://pingomatic.com/ Michael Boyd Clark. http://www.planetmike.com/ ============== Humor ============= Musician's Humor, Part VII Q: What's the difference between alto clef and Greek? Fox: New computer users are often in awe of the things you can get without cost on the Internet. There can be hidden costs for the unwary. Use a "throw away" email address to register, and be constantly on guard against giving away personal information. Use a firewall, and provide only the barest minimum of information on questionnaires. ªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªªª This is a reader-supported publication.
