Off the top of my head: The poke is to DF SZ, the number of lines in
the bottom half of the screen. So... when it's POKEd to 1, that
causes an arithmetic overflow and the attributes get scrolled into
the display file?
(It's definitely the attributes, because setting the screen to
different colours before the POKE produces different stripe
patterns).
