There were two official releases of the ZX Interface 1 ROM, with a report by
Andrew Pennell in Your Spectrum magazine of a third version that improved
compatibility with the QL. However I have never come across this third
version.
I did email Andrew Pennell about year ago to ask if he remembered any
information about this third version of the ROM but unfortunately he had not
kept any details. So unless someone has found an Interface 1 with this ROM,
then it is possible that it was never officially released. Do you know if it
has been found?
It is easy to dump the contents of the Interface 1 ROM and you should find
dumps of versions 1 and 2 on the Internet (else I can email these to you if
required).
The ROM is the ZX Interface 1 is a ROM and not an EPROM, and so it is not
re-programmable. The ROM IC is soldered directly to the PCB, underneath the
overhanging edge connector. This makes it very difficult to remove and
replace. It might not use the same pinout as a standard 8K EPROM and so
would not be directly replaceable (but I might be wrong and would have to
check).
The only way to 'upgrade' the ZX Interface 1 would be to run a copy of the
newest ROM from a ZXC4 ROM cartridge plugged into the ZX Interface 2 or my
SPECTRA SCART interface. The ROM cartridge would override the ROM in the ZX
interface 1. Using a ZX Interface 2 has some limitations and so is not
perfect.

In sostanza dopo i test di gestione decisamente migliori sul QL Clive stava
per far aggiornare anche la ROM della IF1 per rendere più stabile la
gestione per lappunto dei dati scritti sulle MD.
Magari avrebbe adottato i 2 modi di scrittura.
Questo per farvi capire in maniera DEFINITIVA che tra lo SPECCY ed il QL le
MD si comportano in maniera quasi totalmente diversa.
E non ci è voluto molto a scoprirlo: basta usarle per un po ;)
Comunque è una cosa INCREDIBILE: bisognerebbe recuperarla questa ROM 3
Quindi volendo le MD ottimizzate ancora meglio avrebbero dato probabilmente
risultati ancora migliori.
Tanto che, non ve lho detto, ma ci sono dei personaggi in UK che smontano
il natro dalle MD
lo leggono con testine isolate
ed analizzano il segnale a
livello di forma donda e
e
riescono SEMPRE a leggere il dato in quanto pare
che solo il cambio di velocità del nastro od una lettura + lenta
comporti
meno errore e quindi in sostanza non è il NASTRO il problema ma come viene
letto il dato.
Riescono a correggere alcuni piccoli errori e recuperano i titoli.
Fu fatto lo stesso per la cartuccia MD dello Speccy con le schermate di
SABOTUER 3 e di altri titoli INEDITI della DURELL.
