Oggetto: Project Update #34: ZX Spectrum Next by Henrique Olifiers

It’s all about the keyboard
Posted by Henrique Olifiers (Creator)
In the last update we’ve wrapped up all the elements for production, bar the
keyboard which was counting on the ‘last-resort’ solution of ditching the
third layer of the membrane in order to perform as light-touch as we needed
it to.
We’re happy to announce the membrane was produced as planned, and… It is
performing as expected, within the 45gr-55gr of pressure required to result
in a responsive and elegant keyboard for the Spectrum Next. What an
improvement from the dreaded +200gr imposed by the third layer a few weeks
ago!

Test membranes are now on their way to the UK where they will undergo the
final test inside a Next, to ensure all works as expected before the
greenlight for mass production of the keyboard.
The final membrane is here!
And with some adjustments requested already!
We stand red-faced
We’ve been unhappy about the red plastic for the stripes and reset button,
but time and time again got the same result back from the manufacturer. We
kept asking to make it ‘more red’ in line with the colour we specified, to no
avail.
Not... Enough... Red...
Well, it turns out it was our fault all along. We’ve specified the wrong
pantone to begin with, the manufacturer was spot on with their colour... So,
Phil digged into the vaults of Dickinsons Associates and found the original
pantone used on the Speccy rainbow stripe, and we’ve now ordered the right
red. You know, the one we should have ordered to begin with...
Not the red we wanted, but definitely the red we asked for
Bring out the microscope
Having seen the Next case in the flesh and being super happy with it, I was
surprised when Phil asked for a few more tweaks while the keyboard is being
finalised. I didn’t imagine the level of detail he would go into, bringing
out the big guns (well, actually, more like a magnifying glass) and taking
care of every bit of our machine, aiming at nothing less than perfection.
The folks at the plastics manufacturing are super responsive, careful and
caring. The speed at which they tend to the requests is just amazing, always
helping us to achieve the best possible result. We lucked out with these
folks, they are second to none: they’re making a better Next case than we
could hope for.
Let's raise that Spectrum Next, shall we?
OK, now we're getting serious...
Groovy!
What’s Next?
Stay tuned for the next update in a couple of weeks where I’ll be posting
directly from the assembly line at SMS, testing the 2B boards and
daughterboards coming out of the oven like hotcakes -- and in huge numbers!
We’ve got 3,000 Spectrum Nexts to make!
