A Poem

A small thing;

I did not speak at her funeral

But I want to be counted as one of

the mourners.

I see her slender upright form even now,

Standing, bowing at Rockford;

The bearer of Torah.

I hear her high reedy voice:

"The soul you have breathed into me is

pure, oh G-d"

Breathed as in breath-ed,

Like the in and out of breath

that is no more.

My children's faces at her service

Her face at Sammy's bris;

Ben's hand on her skirt,

The mezuzahs on our doors

The blessings on our heads.

A small thing;

I did not speak at her funeral, but

there is an empty place inside

that rushes up to greet me in the morning

in place of the Shema.
