Odd learning:
Opening a second instace of yoshimi in a yoshimi-unfriendly laptop
creates a fully functioning yoshimi. This second Yoshimi creates an
"yoshimi1" source to the Qjackctl Audio tab. The original Yoshimi can
not be deleted - it stays there as a dummy instance.
Yoshimi config file
~/.config/yoshimi/yoshimi.config
can not be edited using a text editor. How to edit the primary instance?

See if this helps:
Start qjackctl, then yoshimi
In the 'Yoshimi' drop-down menu select 'Settings...'
Make sure 'AddSynth Oscillator Size' and 'Internal Buffer Size' are sensible
values (both at 256 is a good starting point).
Select the 'Jack' tab and make sure both 'Set as preferred audio' and
'Autoconnect audio' are checked.
If you want jack midi then check 'Set as preferred MIDI' otherwise it will be
ALSA.
Make sure both 'Jack MIDI Source' and 'Jack Server' are blank entries.
Click on 'Save and Close'
Shutdown Yoshimi and restart it.
Does that solve the problem?
