Any idea? Are these failing laptops faulty ones? But why then
ZynAddSubFX plays well in all of these!
It's possible that yYshimi isn't getting the startup arguments. These days they
are not actually necessary.

See if this helps:

Start qjackctl, then yoshimi

In the 'Yoshimi' drop-down menu select 'Settings...'

Make sure 'AddSynth Oscillator Size' and 'Internal Buffer Size' are sensible
values (both at 256 is a good starting point).

Select the 'Jack' tab and make sure both 'Set as preferred audio' and
'Autoconnect audio' are checked.

If you want jack midi then check 'Set as preferred MIDI' otherwise it will be

Make sure both 'Jack MIDI Source' and 'Jack Server' are blank entries.

Click on 'Save and Close'

Shutdown Yoshimi and restart it.

Does that solve the problem?

Thank you Will

Unfortunately settings you suggested did not help. Actually changed settings turned automatically back to defaults at Yoshimi start.

I think the setting you suggested, "set jack as preferred audio" was not accepted, as Yoshimi can not see Qjackctl jack audio? This is in case of 3 tested laptops not accepting Yoshimi.

Other 3 ones, on the contrary, which are Yoshimi friendly, are accepting that setting "set jack as preferred audio".

Has started in the first place on the machines where yoshimi can't use Jack?

You can test this, e.g. by running from a terminal:

If you get errors like "Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory"

then jack is not running. On the other hand if the output is a list of ports such as:

Then jack is running correctly.

From the yoshimi point of view, if jack is *not running* you will get something like:

"Failed jack_client_open(), status: 11" starting with e.g. -J
