I have been unsuccessful getting Yoshimi to work in Ubuntu Studio 18.04.
This has been the case for the Yoshimi included in the distro, 1.5.7, and
1.5.8. When starting, the GUI and splash screen appear. The splash screen
does not disappear, and the GUI is completely frozen. the command,
"killall yoshimi," fails to eliminate the GUI.
Has anyone else seen anything like it?
I have seen the inability to kill yoshimi. I forget exactly which
revision I'm at (different PC), but it just says "Interrupt received"
and then nothing happens. I've been meaning to look at this but haven't
had the time.
The freeze I'm not sure about, but could it have something to do with
the command line trying, and failing, to read from stdin if launched
from a menu?
Something I'd forgotten about :@(
The guy was running yoshimi & ... first time. This meant the GUI started, then
the CLI started and was immediately robbed of it's access!
If he'd started with:
yoshimi -c & there would ahve been no problem.
However this creates quite a conflict. It would be possible to set first-time
default for no CLI, but if a blind person starts Yoshimi and the CLI is not
enabled it is quite difficult to work out what is going on, so I'm most
reluctant to set that as a default condition.

Say you have a poem and I have a tune.
Exchange them and we can both have a poem, a tune, and a song.
Yoshimi source code is available from either:
