Opportunity to provide early input to the scoping process of the IPBES nexus
and transformative change assessments: Online conferences

Dear IPBES members, observers and other interested stakeholders,
I am pleased to announce that as part of the scoping processes for the thematic
assessment of the interlinkages among biodiversity, water, food and health
(“nexus assessment”) and the thematic assessment of the underlying causes of
biodiversity loss, determinants of transformative change and options for
achieving the 2050 vision for biodiversity (“transformative change assessment”)
of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem
Services (IPBES), two online conferences will be held. They are tentatively
scheduled as follows:
* 30 September - 2 October 2019: Online conference to seek input for the
scoping process for the nexus assessment
* 9 - 11 October 2019: Online conference to seek input for the scoping
process for the transformative change assessment
In decision IPBES-7/1, the Plenary of IPBES adopted the rolling work programme
of IPBES up to 2030. Under objective 1 of the 2030 work programme, assessing
knowledge, the Plenary included, among other deliverables, the nexus assessment
and the transformative change assessment. In the same decision, the Plenary
approved scoping processes for these assessments, based on the initial scoping
reports for the assessments set out in appendix II to document

for consideration by the Plenary at IPBES 8.
The scoping process for each of the two assessments includes an online
conference. These online conferences are a novelty to the scoping processes
conducted by IPBES and are intended to give Governments and other stakeholders
an opportunity to provide early input to the scoping process in order to
increase the policy-relevance of the scoping reports.
Each online conference will be held over three days and give an opportunity for
participants to provide input regarding specific themes related to the
respective assessment. More information on the online conferences will be made
available shortly on the IPBES website. Participation in these online
conferences will require participants to be registered users on the IPBES

groups of experts assisting with the scoping of the two assessments. In this
