Dear YESSers,
Second year in a row YESS is organizing a delegation with observer status to
the IPBES Plenary. The IPBES is the intergovernmental body which assesses the
state of biodiversity and of the ecosystem services it provides to society, in
response to requests from decision makers (more information:
https://www.ipbes.net/). The Plenary convenes once a year, where scientists
present and discuss their findings with decision-makers from all over the
world. In 2019, the Plenary will take place in Paris, France from April 29th
till May 5th. For more information visit this

Last March, the delegation of 10 YESS members had observed the IPBES 6th
Plenary in Colombia. You can read about their impressions, networking and other

The mission of YESS delegation to IPBES Plenary 2019 is two-fold:
- To provide opportunity for a community of early-career researchers to get an
insight into the intergovernmental science-policy-society processes at IPBES;
- To encourage youth involvement in the IPBES process by investigating the role
of youth and identifying opportunities for YESS to contribute in the future.
It is mandatory for ALL delegates to be YESS members. Please apply for
membership before applying for being a delegate using the form on this

As a delegate with YESS, you will:
- learn about IPBES and its workings through online preparatory workshops
before the plenary
- discuss better ways of stakeholder involvement in IPBES work programme on
Stakeholder Day
- observe the Plenary and share thoughts during daily delegation meet-ups and
have opportunities to interact with other scientists and decision-makers
(pending prior organisation)
- post articles about the event on social media (Twitter, YESS newsletter,
Facebook etc.)
- and develop a paper based on reflections on the IPBES science-policy
interface by early-career researchers
YESS does NOT provide funding for attending the event. All delegates are
expected to cover ALL their costs. However, this year the delegation organising
committee is attempting to obtain funds for the purpose of sponsoring flight
tickets to Paris and back for two delegates from the developing countries and
currently residing in a developing country (up to 2000 USD total). Should the
organising committee succeed in obtaining the funds, we will conduct evaluation
of all applications. If you wish to be considered, please indicate so in the
application form. However, we strongly urge all applicants to seek funding from
their places of work or study, for those selected for the delegation we will
issue an official letter that you can use to apply for funding.
