I am not sure how synchronisation works either.
I keep my SL setting in STARTUP.INT but I don't think that will make any difference. I don't need to set SL longer than the screen length but I use a window command to control the window size:
BC window 1,0,0,80,43
Without that I do need to set a larger SL, but it still shrinks when I exit to DOS and return, from the command line.

I guess this has something to do with U2's line synchronization feature?
Not sure exactly how this feature works, but for me at least when I have
the line "df sl=61" in settings.dfl everything seems to work fine in the
case of 43 lines.

I have a problem with lines in Vdosplus. I normally set 43 lines for
the window. This is set in Config.txt and also in STARTUP.INT. However
if I exit to DOS, then return to XY4, I return to 32 lines. If I exit
to DOS again and return I have 14 lines and if I repeat a third time XY4
disappears and I have a completely blank window (with the same in
Vdosfln XY4 hangs so I expect that is what happens here.) I have no
idea what is going on but it would be nice if exiting to DOS and
returning could be accomplished smoothly with no line number change.
