Although preceded the widespread use of the Internet through a few
countries around the world, Islamist terrorism has very quickly, and when
it appears, took the train from the Web to its communications, recruitment
and actions propaganda.
In the end of 1990s and early 2000s, the discussion forums on jihadism
that swarm. Hosted free internet service companies around the world,
these forums were used for AQIM to recruit men to raise funds and ensure
the minimum in terms of communication and propaganda.
At that time, Al Qaeda, hyper-decentralized movement, needed a critical
mass to exist and organize media-violence on the ground.
For this, it has transformed into real jihadist forums universities of
terrorism, providing asymmetric warfare manuals, manufacturing bombs,
communications encryption tools, videos of "motivation", information
periodicals such as Inspire and incentives for acting out for lone wolves
nestled in several countries.
Closely watched, these forums have had little impact is known on the world
population. It was only around 2008 and the explosion in facebook, that
the hearing of jihadist groups has grown.
Worse, it was not until around 2011, coinciding with the outbreak of the
Arab revolutions, an Islamist identity emerged on social networks,
Youth groups of different tendencies came out of nowhere, sometimes
sensationalism, and began to share videos or photos of abuse in different
countries, according to the supports and oppositions. A violent soil has
thus slowly installed in the facebook planet.
Meanwhile, the world has witnessed, almost helpless, to the fall of Mosul,
Iraq, in the hands of ISIS and its introduction in June 2014, a caliphate
of horror, whose henchmen have taken Al Qaeda relay on the web and social
networks have transformed into a catalog of war crimes more than anything.
ISIS, which is not a strategy of lone wolves, focuses on three main points
in its communication on social networks: hidjra to arouse "the Islamic
state" and strengthening the workforce, communicate on the sovereign
character this terrorist state (currency manufacturing, policing,
maintaining a semblance of public service ...) and finally disseminate
propaganda in as many languages and formats possible (internet radio,
web-TVs, magazines .. .).
To do this, the focus was on the social network Twitter, which allows
jihadists quickly disseminate and without any barrier information. By
cons, it is on facebook, which allows long rallies and some degree of
anonymity that ISIS recruits in Europe and in Arab countries. In the
Middle East, there are millions using Twitter, which explains why 50 and 70
000 accounts directly affiliated with ISIS, broadcast their propaganda.
And despite government efforts to close these accounts, they have reached
critical mass allowing them to regenerate. They even found allies among
involuntary "Jihad Watchers", this constellation lovers, former military
and journalists, participating in the relay of information. Most
recently, one of them was forced to apologize on Twitter for hitting the
sensitivity of certain citizens, disseminating the images of soldiers
killed in ambush by terrorists.
Some experts and researchers explain the low yield of social networks in
the recruitment of jihadists in some countries compared to others, which
are 20-30 times more likely, by the melting of this terrorist tank, but
also a greater maturity vis in relation to the violence.
But other experts say that at some societies and the media, a lot of
messages leading to radicalization fell in the area of mundane. Campaigns
often very aggressive against religious minorities or women, have been
widely disseminated and shared through social networks, but also written
and audiovisual media in the total indifference of the authorities.
With love and peace.
