Maine is at 13 pedestrian fatalities so far this year, with four months
left to go. When I opened the newspaper this morning, there was the
Westbrook story, a Skowhegan pedestrian fatality, and a woman in Sumner
found in a ditch on the side of the road, injured, unresponsive, with her
bicycle lying next to her. Really disturbing that cases of hit and run are
A Jane Jacobs quote comes to mind, and I agree given the highways splitting
towns, making roads unsafe for walking - an activity that gets people out
and connected, not isolated:
"Not T.V. or illegal drugs but the automobile has been the chief destroyer
of American communities."
