Hello Everyone,
Thank You John for the Minutes.
FYI, I applied a CLYNK Tag to my Green Bag of Cans, Plastic Bottles, and
successfully scanned and deposited both my Bag and Lee"s Bag at the
Westbrook Hannaford's CLYNK Station today.

from the "Committee" menu. I'm also attached a PDF of the Portland Bike/Ped
Committee's by-laws which are mentioned in the meeting notes, for your
perusal as we hopefully consider creating by-laws of our own this year.
Note tasks for individuals highlighted with yellow.
Meeting Notes, Wednesday, January 16, 2019
Special Location: Dunkin’, 742 Main Street, Westbrook
Attended: LeeLee, John, Agy, Dennis
Old Business
Brief updates:
1.
T-shirts - More discussion of options. Agy brings up using Amazon for
ordering with design on. She can get us an estimate in about a month.
1.
Web site (incl. group permission to reimburse John for the domain name
renewal; He'll look up those numbers again before the meeting) -
Website is public at http://westbrooksafemobility.org! Still working
out some accessibility issues with Carson’s screen reader. Visually, Agy
suggests black text on white background, as the most readable for
sight impaired. LeeLee will repay John $28 for another year of domain
name out of WSMAC funds.
1.
Clynk - John will be the tag keeper. Has some currently if people want
any, contact him on Facebook or at johnbrooking4@xxxxxxxxx to arrange
pickup.
1.
Hannaford intersection & others as necessary - The long-awaited DOT
report is currently with BCM, and they hope to have it to the City by the
end of January. (The Bicycle Coalition of Maine [BCM] was and continues to
be contracted by DOT to help them administer the “Heads Up” safety
program.)
Agy is interested in results of any police traffic safety details last
year. John notes that there was at least one that included participation
from multiple surrounding towns and coordinated by BCM’s Law Enforcement
Collaborative. Suggests Agy ask Angela @ BCM about that, or just ask the
Westbrook PD.
Mention was made of a new video released by DOT to educate pedestrians
about using crosswalk flashers, where available (
https://youtu.be/mhOyMsQM4Q0). Speaking of which, the Rectangular Rapid
Flashing Beacon (RRFB) at Main & Stroudwater should be installed next
spring, per Eric at December meeting. (As if to underscore the need yet
again, LeeLee, her daughter-in-law, and John experienced a near miss in
that very crosswalk after the meeting. Traffic was stopped in the travel
lane, but some imbecile in the far lane drove around to the right of the
stopped car in front of him or her, in the parking lane, and had to come
to a quick stop to avoid us! Idea: Concrete pedestrian bump-outs at the
ends of the crosswalks, to both prevent these illegal drive-bys in the
parking lane as well as shorten the crossing distance!!)
Also spent time analyzing Agy’s incident last February with the truck, in
which she was crossing a driveway at Rowe Ford(?) and was hit by a truck
pulling out of the driveway. Agy suggests a useful marketing phrase
“Mobility is Freedom” (Mobility = Freedom?)
1.
Rock Row - John wants to contact Sebago Technics, who is doing the
road design, about what they are planning.
1.
Education/Brochures - Agy wants to work on some for kids, distribute
through schools. Agy will also send some general brochure templates to
Leelee.
Projects:
1. Immersion Days
LeeLee needs to figure out who to contact about wheelchairs to lend. Kim
has said she would contact Cathy Claridge re: white canes, we should
double-check with Kim. Perhaps a date sometime after Together Days, so we
can advertise there.
Agy suggests a Kids Immersion Day. Maybe we could do a kids component of
the regular Immersion Day, if we could find someone to be in charge of it.
Or part of Together Days, or Safety Day?
No decision yet. LeeLee will raise poll or discussion about what month.
New Business
We ran out of time to discuss both these things, hope to do so in February.
1.
Discussion of 2019 activities & priorities
In terms of activities, at least we know we want to do Together Days in
early June), Immersion Day (date TBD), and Kids Safety Day in September.
1.
Bylaws: Introduce Portland Bike/Ped's, get reaction, set timeline for
adaptation and adoption of our own (incl. adoption of financial procedures
following consultation with Phil Brown from WWCC)
LeeLee and John feel it is becoming more important to put slightly more
official process around the running of the Committee, such as official
officers that are voted on, have terms of office, and so on. John offered
the by-laws of the Portland Bicycle/Pedestrian Committee as a possible
starting point (with their permission), given that they are a similar group
to us. Printed copies of their bylaws were handed out for people to browse
after the meeting. John will send them to the email list.
Next meeting: Wed Feb 20, WWCC, 5:30 PM
