This is being composed at 12 am Sunday. I read all the E - Mails concerning
Carson's Request Saturday on my gmail address but have just read some other
messages on my aol line. Which has all the conversations concerning Carson's
request.
I am asking what is " NFB " in Maine ?
Over the past week or so of Rain, dim sunlight or no sunlight, one of my pet
peeves are Drivers operating dark colored CARS - SUV's - P/U's in driving heavy
Rain and Fog, with NO LIGHTS TURNED ON AT ALL - ON THE TURNPIKE - ON I - 295,
ON WARREN AVENUE. THAT IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS PRACTICE. HOW FAR DO THOSE
DRIVERS TRAVEL AND NEVER GET PULLED OVER ?
The Situation here in Westbrook has slowly developed over time - time measured
in Years - a Well intentioned Bypass for Commercial Traffic so Main Street
would become SAFER and more user and business friendly.
A compressed and congested but at the same time, a growing, active busy
Downtown combined with that Bypass that was never completely finished at its
western end.
Residents and Visitors who both live here and work here and live elsewhere but
work in any of the surrounding towns and cities have to drive thru Westbrook .
Residents such as the Families on Forest Street, which is a Commuter Artery
connection have voiced their concerns.
I am sometimes scared out of my skin at places like Amato's on Main Street,
when backing into a parking slot and have someone come FLYING in from Main
Street and park in a slot facing the front entrance as if they are the only
person there. So, I can understand Why Carson feels the way he does and I even
have a Color Back - Up camera view on the Dashboard of my Ford F - 150 !
I once asked the WPD about people driving into the Hannaford's Parking Lot,
hellbent for something, and cutting diagonally across empty parking aisles, as
someone is walking down towards their car with a loaded grocery cart and a
driver and car cut across their path diagonally. I was told Hannaford's is a
private entity. Ok .... Picture yourself visually impaired or a senior citizen
walking towards the Store from your car or from the store towards your car with
young children and a load of groceries.
Pedestrians that live here or are here on business or on vacation have to
contend with the busy traffic. At the marked and identified Crosswalks on Main
Street and WCD. I have been asked by friends or residents about having a
marked and identified Pedestrian Crosswalk installed at the " Y " Intersection
of Park Road and East Bridge Street. Also at the offset Intersection of Bridge
- North and Pierce Streets. So, there is plenty of work out there and most
drivers are courteous but not everyone is paying attention. Driver Distraction
- and - I may respectfully say here - some Pedestrians are also distracted
when using their tablets - cellphones, etc., and not paying attention to where
they are walking. If a Driver sees someone walking across their path and slams
on their brakes - will the Driver behind him or her be paying attention ? We
all hope so.

been a really long Winter. I was shocked to hear that there still places that
have snow on the ground in Maine. I suppose I shouldn’t be because, now that I
think about it, where I grew up it was colder longer due to being more inland.
I wanted to talk about when there was a time I confidently traveled as a blind
pedestrian regardless of the weather. It is to be noted, that version of me
could use landmarks to navigate visually. The current version of me cannot.
To further throw a monkey rench into the works is the increasingly
aggressiveness of drivers pared with driver distraction. The iceing on the
cake is hearing my Brother, who happens to be the President of NFB of Maine
tell me that he would not travel in Westbrook because he feels it is too
dangerous. My inner argument is, where is the line to be found between
independence and outright danger in simply trying to travel? After such a
long Winter I wrestle with trying to determine where that line is? In my
mind wandering into the danger zone could easily happen as the result of over
confidence which I equate with stupidity that can result in death. I find
myself boxed in and not liking it. What do all of you think? Carson.
