New Topic: Saccarrappa Park
Hi, My name is Bob Barrett, and I am a Westbrook resident. Due to my work
schedule, I do not currently have the time to be a part of WSMAC but I read
the emails, and I appreciate the advocacy of the group for a safer
Westbrook for everyone.
I am not sure if public park space is beyond the scope of this group, but I
was disappointed to read on the front page of last week's American Journal
that the city council is favorably considering selling Saccarrappa Park to
a developer for a boutique hotel. I wrote a letter opposing this course of
action to the American Journal in response to this article, points included:
*We should be protect this space as the premiere place to view the iconic
falls. This space would be a key jewel in the proposed Presumpscot River
loop trail from Bridge St to the rail bridge. If this trail happens, this
will bring far more local people to Main St than a hotel.
*There were comments that the park is not used. It has been a staging area
for the Bridge St bridge for the last two years. With a minimal
infrastructure investment and some creativity from our neighbors we could
mirror what Congress Sq Park has done when the Eastland Hotel wanted that
park space.
*Soon there will be a significant influx of Maine Medical Center employees
at the office building across the bridge. This seems a natural space for
them to access while patronizing local businesses.
I hope Westbrook does not sell a prime piece of public property for the
profit of an out of state business. I would appreciate comments. Thanks,

Eric, Chief Roberts: Do P/ Svcs. Street Sweepers have clearance to run
Red Lights ? I realize they cannot stop on a dime. But I just watched one
run thru a Red Light crossing Bridge Street at Cumberland Street @ 9:53 AM.
It was zipping right along, heading uphill across the Intersection.
Sorry I did not get a Plate #.
I also think drivers need a visual reminder that Bridge Street Speed Limit
is 25 MPH ! With the amount of Commercial Traffic crossing here.
