[wsmac] Re: [PBPAC] Fwd: PBIC Messenger: Upcoming Webinar Series to Explore Pedestrian Safety and Accessibility

FYI, I just registered for both of these, in WSMAC's name. (I hope that's
okay. It's not like I'll be doing anything except watching and listening.)

On a related note, I searched for information about exclusive pedestrian
signal phasing (all traffic stopped while pedestrians cross) and found this
informative but rather technical article. Among other considerations, it
addresses the concern about blind pedestrians that Carson raised to us a
while ago. Useful reading if you're bored sitting at home and are up for
some technical reading.

Actually, the entire guide is about Accessible Pedestrian Signals:

Communities across the country are working to integrate the needs of
pedestrians into transportation decisionmaking. As agencies shift toward
adopting roadway design practices and safety countermeasures that enhance
the pedestrian experience, attention should also be given to the mobility
and accessibility needs of pedestrians of all ages and abilities. In
particular, pedestrians who are blind or have low vision have different
needs to be considered when deploying safety countermeasures. In this
two-part webinar series, we will showcase strategies that can be used to
enhance accessibility at crossing locations and along separated bicycle
lanes at sidewalk level. Our panelists will share their research and the
unique perspective of pedestrians who are not always considered when making
transportation decisions. Following their presentations, panelists will
respond to questions from attendees.

Panelists include: Elizabeth Hilton (Federal Highway Administration),
Janet Barlow (Accessible Design for the Blind), Dr. Beezy Bentzen
(Accessible Design for the Blind), Dr. Robert Wall Emerson (Western
Michigan University), and Donna Smith (Sound Transit).

This Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Office of Safety webinar will
be delivered by VHB and the UNC Highway Safety Research Center through a
contract to provide training and technical assistance to the
FHWA-designated Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Focus States and Cities.
