Thursday, July 12, I watched a young Mom with two daughters try to cross
Main Street towards The Library at the Crosswalk facing People's United
Bank. The Control Button was pushed. They waited thru at least 3 Cycles and
the White Illuminated Walking Pedestrian Symbol NEVER showed on the
Opposite side, The People's United Bank side. The Mom said " Oh No"
She watched Traffic at the USPS entrance, with both daughters holding her
hands and walked to the East bound Crosswalk, facing the Big Apple Store/
Gas Station, and pushed that Control Button. That one worked and the White
Illuminated Walking Pedestrian Symbol came up across the Street. They
Today, Friday the 13th, I used the Ped. Control Switch to cross from the
Library side of Main Street to the Post Office side. Everything worked OK.
When I went to return to my vehicle parked in the back of the Library, I
pushed the Ped Control Switch to cross towards the People's United Bank and
Library, the same way, the Mother and daughters tried the first time
Thursday. What I felt, was or did not feel, was there was no Contact
closing, when you push the gray rubber circular switch. On the opposite
side controls and on the Other Westbound Control Switch facing Big Apple,
you can feel the Contact close when you push the circular button. I waited
several cycles and never saw the White Walking Pedestrian Symbol come up.
So, I watched Post Office traffic and crossed the P.O. driveway and pushed
the Button facing Big Apple. The White Per walking symbol came up. Main
Street east and west were both Stopped. I started walking across, for
halfway on the Crosswalk when, a small black car started turning RIGHT,
from Spring Street towards Main Street. I stopped momentarily and pointed
my Right Hand and Index Finger at the Driver, who apparently then noticed
me and stopped to let me finish crossing.
The Westbound Main Street Pedestrian Activated Crosswalk Controls facing
People's United Bank needs to be troubleshooted before someone gets hit !
