Group,
DOT is fine with our doing our own poster, and has already addressed our
concerns in a new version of the poster. What do you think of the new one,
which should be attached? (There is both a PDF and a PNG of the color
poster, plus a version with a white background, as well as the "Heads Up"
program logo.)
I asked if they're planning on doing a smaller reprinting. I suppose
they might if they say we like them.

Not to worry John.
We – as a department – have already gone back to update the poster design
to address the concerns expressed about the graphic. The graphic now
depicts a person crossing
the street in a crosswalk with a motor vehicle in the background. We have
also addressed the coloring for the information in yellow at the bottom.
Instead of this text having black splotches it now is a solid yellow.
I’ve attached the latest version
in both formats for your reference and possible use. We’ve also included
an updated meme for use online.
As Jim has said, local engagement and effort designing and distributing
your own posters is not only acceptable, but encouraged. It’s the local
effort that makes
this project work!

Thanks for letting us know, John. I'll forward your note to MaineDOT, but
they may also appreciate hearing directly from your group. I think that
MaineDOT's position will be that anything that the community does
to to promote the forum is good. I
I will be in Gorham this afternoon, so I'll try to stop by the Westbrook
Library and grab some of the MaineDOT posters to put up around town. Any
help your group can provide posting the MaineDOT fliers would also
be appreciated, but I understand the committee's position.
Thanks
Jim

Sam, Shannon, and Jim,
Happy Monday! I hope you're all somewhat recovered from the Swap.
Late last week, the Westbrook Safe Mobility & Access Committee (WSMAC)
made a decision to design and print our own posters for the Westbrook
Pedestrian Forum, rather than the ones DOT designed and printed. While
we commend the DOT for the effort and money they put into their posters,
the Committee as a whole had two concerns with them. The first was the
alarming image, as others have already noted. Secondly, people felt that
the text was hard to read from a distance,
as the yellow letters blended into the black background. Some committee
members showed them to others, who had a similar reaction, and the members
did not feel comfortable distributing them.
Attached for your information is the poster that we designed, have had
printed, and will be distributing. We customized ours more for our
committee, so they don't need to be seen as a direct replacement for the
DOT posters. Both could still be used. The DOT posters are still at the
library and other people are welcome to distribute them if they wish.
I know that this won't be a very welcome decision to some people. I know
you all well enough that I feel comfortable telling you about it, and
obviously people should know about, but I don't know if it would
be best for DOT to find out about this from you or from us. Patrick and
know each other a little, but I don't think Joyce Taylor knows who I am.
What do you think, regarding communicating this decision to the DOT?
