John, Lee, Cary, Abigail, Carson, Angela, Anne, Kim, Kristie, Robert and
WSMAC members:

The Pedal and Walk Safely this Summer is Appropriate given what I saw late
this afternoon.

Drivers, me included stopped at both sides of the marked Crosswalk /
Riverwalk Trail Sign on the downstream side of the new  Vehicle Bridge on
Bridge Street,
to let a Tall Young Dad and his Very Young Daughter, pedal East across on
the Crosswalk.  They were on a long Tandem Bicycle, each wearing helmets.

I turned Left onto Main Street.
What happened next is, in my view,
Very Dangerous, depending on your perspective.

The traffic heading West on Main Street was quite busy. The Marked
Crosswalk for the old Bridge Street, now the new Green Pedestrians Only
Walking Bridge, and also For Vehicle Parking is also for Pedestrians
crossing to and from the CVS, Book and Quill, and the Municipal Parking Lot
in back of CVS, as well as for  Vehicles entering and exiting that Parking
Lot.  I was second in line heading East. Traffic heading West was Two Lanes
wide, one Lane turning into the former Bridge Street, and the other Lanes
going West towards the T Intersection of Main and Bridge Streets.  At the "
Courtesy "
Marked Crosswalk, from Old Bridge Street to CVS, I would like to see more
Drivers leave that Space Open,  mainly for Pedestrians, in both directions.

As, the Driver in front of me, with his Line of Sight blocked by Stopped
Vehicles just beyond the Courtesy Marked Crosswalk, suddenly had that Same
Tandem Bicycle Right in Front of him, with the young Dad Pedaling across
the Crosswalk. I also Hit my Brakes and stopped in time with no problems,
The Driver directly behind me also Stopped, but Right behind me.

In your Bicycling Experience, John,
Should the Bicyclist walked his Tandem Bicycle Across the Courtesy Marked
Crosswalk ? Or was he in his Rights pedaling across a Very Busy Congested
Main Street on a late Monday afternoon ?

With West bound traffic essentially blocking the Line of Vision for East
bound Main Street Drivers at that Courtesy Marked Crosswalk.

Thank You,
Dennis

Recap:
National Bike to School Day!
2,500 Maine Kiddos Biked & Walked to School During Bike Month!

High fives go out to communities for raising excitement and awareness about
#BiketoSchoolDay 2019! Because of your commitment to safe walking and
biking for Maine students, 23 schools registered their events with an
estimated 2,500 students participating in walk & bike to school activities
in May. Nationally, a record-breaking 3,415 communities participated.

Bike to School Day events encourage communities to rally around safety
improvements that benefit children, which ultimately promote safety and
support for safe, active travel for all. Way to go, everyone, and we hope
you keep pedaling with passion!
Mark your calendars! National Walk to School Day is on October 2, 2019—where
your community can walk its way to a healthy and safe day to school. Be on
the lookout for Walk to School Day registration to open in early August!

Maine's Bike/Ped Safety Education Program

Our education team has been busy, too, with 85 separate bike/ped safety
events reaching more than 2,700 people! This includes Bike Rodeos as shown
in the video below, which was recorded in Orono last month when 70 kids
learned the importance of traffic rules and bicycle-handling skills:

Wear Your Helmet the Right Way
Eyes, Ears, and Mouth Test

   - EYES - You should see the very edge of your helmet when you look up
   past your eyebrows.
   - EARS - The straps should meet right under your ear lobes to form a Y.
   - MOUTH - The strap should be loose enough so you can breathe and insert
a finger between the buckle and your skin, but tight enough that if you
drop your jaw (as in a yawn) you can feel the helmet pull down on the top
   of your head.

It’s the law in Maine to wear a helmet correctly if you are under 16. Do
the “Eyes, Ears, and Mouth Test.
