In Westbrook drivers run red lights right in front of the Police and nothing is
done. Tailgating happens when drivers drive the speed limit or near it.
If red light running and tailgating was enforced strictly, a lot of this
would go away.

Yes, I actually raised this issue with Senator Angus King at the National Bike
Summit because speed cameras have been proven to be very effective. He didn't
think removing that restriction would pass in Maine.
In looking into the history in Maine, An Act to Regulate the Use of Traffic
Surveillance Cameras, became a prohibition against any traffic surveillance
cameras, signed into law in 2009 under Governor Baldacci.
New York already has speed traffic cameras, limited to school zones. They have
red light cameras, limited to cities with population more than 1 million.
It will be interesting to see if this group can get the speed traffic cameras
extended beyond school zones. Colorado allows in school and construction zones,
residential areas, and areas adjacent to municipal parks.

Interesting that they are focusing on safety cameras. That is an issue that
some of us related to BCM have talked about recently. The biggest challenge for
those who might want to see them is that Maine currently does not allow the use
of traffic enforcement cameras. It would be interesting to see what New York's
experience is.

BCM has been receiving lots of concerns about speeding in school zones, and
safety concerns for kids riding and walking to school.
I am reminded of a quote by Jane Jacobs ( for those who are not familiar with
her, she's worth looking up, a great activist for community-based approach to
building cities, fought and won battles in NYC against making highways through
the city)
"Not T.V. or illegal drugs, but the automobile has been the chief destroyer of
American communities." – Jane Jacobs

Hey,
My name is Zane Walker and I’m 14 years old. In 2013, my good friend, Lucian,
was hit and killed by a reckless driver. There isn’t a day that goes by that I
don’t think of him.
Since Lucian was run down, more than 45 other kids have been killed by reckless
drivers on New York City streets. This year alone, six kids have been killed by
drivers — and all these kids had friends and families, too.
We know that whole communities are grieving because our leaders aren’t doing
enough to keep us safe.

taking things into our own hands. We’re going to stand up and demand our

I am joining the Vision Zero Youth Council and the C.U.R.B. Speeding (Children
United to Rein-In Breakneck Speeding) Coalition to call on our leaders to
expand the speed safety camera program to more schools.
Can I count on you being there, too? Our lives depend on it.
