Hi, WSMAC,
As some of you know, I am a certified instructor for a national
bicycling curriculum called CyclingSavvy <http://cyclingsavvy.org/>. We
empower bicyclists with the knowledge and skills to give them confidence to
ride anywhere, whether on trails, rural roads, or city traffic.
I wanted to let you know that I have scheduled a set of classes for next
weekend, *Friday June 15 *and *Saturday June 16*. There are 3 sessions to
the full course, but you don't have to take all 3. The sessions are:
- *Truths & Techniques of Traffic Riding*: A classroom session (no bike
required) covering the basic rules of movement, the law concerning
bicycling on roads, common crash causes and avoidance, and strategies and
techniques you can use to make your riding around traffic safer and less
stressful.
- *Train Your Bike*: This on-bike course takes place in a parking lot,
and teaches bike handling skills starting from basic starting and stopping,
using your brakes (without going over the handlebars), using your gears,
and some emergency maneuvers. Even if you don't intend to ride in traffic
much, this is still a useful course just to improve your confidence on
trails and quiet neighborhood streets.
- *Tour of Portland*: This on-bike session is a group ride around
Portland to put together everything we've learned in the other two
sessions. We stop regularly to discuss certain intersections and other
features, and give students a chance to ride through those features alone
after watching the instructor do it.
You can take either of the first two classes by themselves, but they are
both prerequisites if you want to go on the Tour. The cost is $45/session
individually, but only $95 if you sign up for all 3 at once. I'll be
offering the classroom on Friday evening 6/15 at 6 PM, followed by the two
on-bike sessions on Saturday 6/16, the skills class in the morning and the
Tour in the afternoon. If you can't make all the current dates but would
like to sign up for all 3 to get the price break, you can sign up for some
as "pre-pay for future session".
I know not all of you are riders, but you might be interested in the
classroom or the skills session, and you probably have friends who could
use this. Please forward as appropriate! I would love to see some of you in
the class.
