I think this calls for a talk with MDOT. I can email the Commissioner but
I'd like to hear from Eric before I do. He may be able to shed some light
on this!

John, I agree 100% . With that, I would include having to cross Main
Street, at the former Vallee' s Square old Bridge Street / Main Street
Crosswalk to or from CVS. That Intersection no longer has Traffic Signals
to stop Traffic in order to cross Main  Street.

My personal theory is that people usually want to take the straightest
line between where they are and where they are going, or at least that's my
usual walking strategy. That might explain the behavior if people are
walking down Bridge Street and intending to go to anywhere west of the

Thank You .  I thought WSMAC members should be aware of my own two
recent experiences with Pedestrians,  one last night at Main and Bridge
Streets and a morning at Bridge and  Cumberland Streets, with a Middle
Eastern Lady just calmly walking across Cumberland Street at Severino' s
Store at the East side, where there is no CROSSWALK,  and the westbound
Cumberland Street traffic had a GREEN LIGHT. .She continued walking up
Bridge Street on the
R/ H side, along the White Painted Fog Line.  The  Sidewalk is on the
Left hand side.

It’s hard to explain or predict what goes through individual pedestrian
minds when looking at how they decide to travel.  It basically boils down
to the fact that they are effectively unrestricted in their movements.
I’ve attached a screen shot of the Mall at the University of Maine.  If you
take a look at the paved paths you’ll see how they ‘ve been added where the
“goat paths” get created by the mob students between each class.  You can
also see new goat paths that have been created that I bet will eventually
become paved walks.

John suggested conducting a Survey to try finding out how many people
use the new Green Pedestrian Only Bridge to cross the  Presumpscot River,
or Why They Do Not use it . And, instead walk across on the sidewalkless
Vehicular Bridge.

After watching the One Male Pedestrian walk directly across in Front of
me last night as I described in an E - Mail,  at the Main Street
Intersection Crosswalk while I had a GREEN LEFT TURN ARROW FOR BRIDGE
STREET and I distinctly noticed the  Orange Raised Hand instead of the
White Walking Pedestrian.  My feeling is that many Pedestrians crossing
Main Street heading towards the Vehicular Bridge via the West Crosswalk,
not the Crosswalk at the Edwards Block Side, are developing a habit of
using the White Painted Fog Line Lane to walk across the Bridge facing
traffic OR, and I have not actually seen this,  but people may walk
diagonally across the Bridge towards Dana Court and  Brown Street or up
Bridge  Street on the R/ H sidewalk.

Crossing Main Street towards Bridge Street from Mechanic Street, the
most direct route is across the new Vehicular Bridge, and not across the
new Green Pedestrian Bridge. I would hope the soon to arrive MMC employees
will use the new Green Pedestrian Bridge in both directions at Lunch time.
