At the most basic level, Searle argues for the existence of intrinsic mental states. On Searle's view people really do have such things as beliefs and desires. Because Searle rejects the Cartesian categories he can acknowledge the existence of such things as beliefs and desires without positing anything non-physical. Some intellectually challenged people don't understand what he means. They accuse him and his followers of Cartesianism or something resembling it.
