The idea is that once we have developed the ability to name things, then by virtue of that we automatically know what kind of things those names refer to. So what is needed is an ability to name things. And before you can name things you will need to have things. So you need a way of dividing the world up into things - which is a perceptual ability that computer systems typically don't have.
