Just wanted to exhibit how Sean's work has inspired me on my day job.
This is from a closed list of Python Software Foundation members.
We're thinking of starting a new list (diversity-sig) and Sean's
approach has my attention at least (I'm one of these members).

In the interests of moving ahead with this, I wanted to think outside
the box a sec.

The excerpts below are the work of this gent:

Dr. Sean Wilson, Esq.
Assistant Professor
Wright State University

I like the echoing to multiple lists i.e pro-active cross-posting to
several archives all mirroring each other.  People on closed lists
with open subscriptions worry about a publicly archiving email address
subscribing as a community service (4chan was mentioned, not by me
(I'm just lurking)).

This might seem like overkill, on the other hand some people know to
search Google Groups, might wanna join at that outlet.  It's like
having multiple brick and mortar storefronts.... I'm sure I don't need
to explain this to peers.

So maybe the new diversity-sig list shouldn't just exist within the
Python domain?  We could push out to a wider audience?  And if not
that sig, some other sig?

I'm aware that groups like edu-sig already get picked up by crawlers
like Nable, but the difference is those are read only.

Oh wait, looks like I'm wrong.  Nabble invites posting.  So I guess my
suggestion is moot.

The other thing I point out is the Guidelines.  They're very verbose
and Sean plays referee pretty aggressively, but only according to his
own spelled out rules.  There's no rule set for the current diversity
list, which is completely ad hoc in flavor, people making it up as
they go.  He doesn't censor ahead of time, but he will put someone on
moderation (a kind of time out).  He's very sportsmanlike and always
explains what he's doing in terms of these public rules of the road
(so he doesn't come off as capricious).

I suggest diversity-sig, even if only run under Python.org, have a
clear set of ground rules.  However, taking a page from Sean, there's
nothing verboten about using this or that word as it's all about
context.  Ian was just using some R-rated words on the diversity list,
but in a professional non-threatening way that others (who shall
remain nameless) applauded.  There's no laundry list of forbidden
words, praise Allah.

Re Sean's guidelines, I'm certainly not proposing adopting these
verbatim for diversity-sig.  For one thing, it's possibly apropos to
look at credentials and track record, with several participants on the
Aahz list underlining their degrees, qualifications, past experience
(as trainers or whatever).  This was not considered mandatory however,
and only a few people put their cards on the table in this way.

EXHIBIT (something to emulate):

Guidelines:

INTRODUCE YOURSELF
If you are new to Wittrs, we ask that you send an email to the group,
introducing yourself. This is purely voluntary, but we would very much
like you to do it. Please tell us who you are, what your occupation
is, how you learned of the group, and what you think of Wittgenstein.

WITTRS ON THE WEB
There are two ways to read and contribute to Wittrs – by email or on
the web. If you choose to read the group on the web, you have the
following choices:
   1. WEB VIEW:  --  http://tinyurl.com/ku7ga4
   2. THE BOARD -- http://alturl.com/whcf
   3. GOOGLE:  -- http://groups.google.com/group/Wittrs
   4. YAHOO:   -- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Wittrs/
   5. FREELIST:  --  //www.freelists.org/archive/wittrs/09-2009

(Each of these services requires registration. It's no big deal. You
create a login and a password. You must be logged in to post. Only one
of the services, #2, is a message board. It had more posting options
for you. The others are simply web-archives provided by
Opensubscriber, Google, etc.)
