I just returned home from spending the past week at Wisconsin Point/ Superior. As usual it was a fantastic time. The weather, as usual, played a major role in the productivity on the Point. I arrived on Monday, Sept 21 around noon. The rest of the day was one of those that one dream's about!! Within minutes several Parasitic Jaegers were passing by Stop 1on the Point. This was followed by a Pomarine Jaeger about an hour later (those there for the morning had enjoyed it passing right in front of them). This time it was interacting with a Parasitic a little further out. The two "flocks" of immature Sabine's Gulls passed to the west, heading into the Duluth area. The first had three birds, the next two. Also present were 2 Franklin's Gulls, one of which was an immature. Single Merlin and Peregrine Falcon passed by. And then, the frosting on the cake, around 4:30. An adult Long- tailed Jaeger spent at least 5 minutes passing in front of us at stop 1. Consequently the ten of us had a jaeger slam! This included Ty and Ida B, Jerry and Karen S, Ron and Lynn, Peder and me. Tuesday, Sept 21 was considerably quieter, apparently due to the strong storms that passed south of the area overnight. (We only had a few drops of rain, contrary to the dire early predictions.) Highlights included a Cackling Goose, male Black Scoter, Red-necked and Horned Grebes, 3 Franklin's Gulls, 50 Am. Golden Plovers, great looks at a Pacific Loon (especially the 2nd time), 2 Parasitic Jaegers, a probable Pomarine Jaeger (seen by two of us reacting with a gull but soon disappeared) and 2 Harris's Sparrows. Wed, Sept 22 continued the quieter trend. Highlights included a female Black Scoter, Red-throated Loon, 1 Franklin's Gull, 1 immature Thayer's Gull, 3 Parasitic Jaegers, NINE Harris's Sparrows and 2 Bohemian Waxwings. Thur, Sept 23, before the rains commenced around 1:30 pm, highlights were a White Pelican flying between the waves, 1 Franklin's Gull, 3 Parasitic Jaegers, 5+ Harris's Sparrows, 25 Savannah Sparrows, and a Rusty Blackbird. Tom will summarize the highlights for Sept 24-26, the "official" WSO weekend. However two things of note were a probable Arctic Tern and a definite female Mountain Bluebird. The latter was in the park at the junction of Moc. Mike Rd and Hwys 2/53 during the late afternoon. As usual it was an exciting and most enjoyable time. The front on Monday night and especially the strong front on Thursday caused changes in the activity of the birds on Wisconsin Point, as can be seen by the above comments----and Tom's summary (to follow soon). One wonders what is missed during the fall on the Point due to the limited birding, except for this week. It can be as quiet as the moon, but then again it can be almost unbelievable!! Thanks to everyone who participated, along with the birds, making this another memorable event. And now for some sleep!
