A wintering population of 60-100 golden eagles uses the coulees and bluffs
along the Mississippi River valley from Prairie du Chien to La Crosse. The
Golden Eagle Project, operating out of the National Eagle Center in Wabasha
MN, coordinates an annual survey of these birds. This winter's survey will
take place Saturday, January 16, 2016.

The Golden Eagle Project would like to better cover the survey area in
Wisconsin. Volunteers are needed to drive any of 35 routes in western
Wisconsin where 94 birds were observed last year.

To participate in this survey, volunteers are asked to attend an
identification training session and field trip from 1-4 pm on Saturday,
December 19th at the Riverdale High School in Muscoda, WI. The training will
consist of an hour-long presentation on identifying golden eagles and
distinguishing them from immature bald eagles. This will then be followed by
a caravan through the surrounding countryside looking for suitable habitat
and practicing your identification skills. (During last year's survey, my
wife, Ann, and I saw one over Sand Branch Road just south of Muscoda.)
Registration isn't required - just show up and follow the signs in the
building directing you to the right room.

If you can't attend the training session but would like to participate,
contact the National Eagle Center. You might be able to attend another
training session, or just travel along with a trained observer during the
survey.

For more information, contact the National Eagle Center at

information about the survey itself can be found here:
