I went over to Merrill this morning, arriving at the yard off Hwy 107
along the Wisconsin River around 9. Ten minutes later the bird flew
over the house from the east, landing in a deciduous tree by the
spruce and cedars. It remained there for 15 minutes, not looking too
spry. However it then came down to the deck area, soon feeding on
the suet like a woodpecker. It looked and acted much better and was
still feeding when I left, then below the suet feeder instead of on it.
Dan's directions are excellent and the place is very easy to find.
Standing along the red pines on the north side of the yard one can
watch the feeders that are on the deck. They have a nice variety of
additional birds, which are entertaining, until the star shows up!!
Also there are a lot of red squirrels around, who do not like
intruders, and let you know about it.

Good luck if you go. (A big thank you to Dan for checking out this
bird and especially for getting permission for birders to come and
watch for it.)
