My wife and I attended a family wedding this past weekend in San
Francisco. Family occupied most of our time, but I was able to get out
for a few brief birding jaunts. This was my first visit to California,
and several folks on this list offered advice to me. I was able to see
three out of four target birds on the trip, all lifers: California
Towhee, Nuttall's Woodpecker, and Allen's Hummingbird. I birded the
Botanical Gardens, Ocean Beach, and Muir Woods National Monument in
Marin County, enjoying a nice variety of western species: Bushtit,
Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Western and Heerman's Gulls, Brandt's and
Pelagic Cormorants, Western Grebe, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Black
Phoebe, California Scrub-jay, Steller's Jay, Pacific Wren, Lesser
Goldfinch, Spotted Towhee, Brown Pelican, and Black-headed Grosbeak. It
was also interesting to see western variants of some of our common
birds, including Song Sparrow and White-crowned Sparrow (the latter had
me stumped with its familiar yet distinctly different song).
Thanks to all who gave me advice!
