We needn't have worried about missing "good" birds when we returned home
from our southern Wisconsin birding trip: Wednesday's backyard birdwatching
brought 21 species, which included:
4 Chimney Swifts (first arrivals)
1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird (female)
2 House Wrens (a pair, "warbling" loudly and searching for a home)
1 Gray Catbird (mewing and chortling)
1 Swainson's Thrush (on the ground, quietly probing for food)
1 Purple Finch (female)
3 American Goldfinch (brilliantly yellow!)
5 White-crowned Sparrows (great "racing stripes"!)
3 Orchard Orioles (yellowish-olive green with black throats)
4 Baltimore Orioles (young & old, squabbling over the jelly feeders)
2 Nashville Warblers (bright yellow, gray head, eyering)
2 Cape May Warblers (on the ground, quietly probing for food)
1 Magnolia Warbler (stunning yellow, black, and white)
1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak (gotta love that triangular rosy breast patch!)
And it looks like today is bringing even more! Back to the backyard.
