This afternoon I birded my way up the east shore of the bay of Green Bay from UW-Green Bay to Bay Shore County Park. The highlight was finding a juvenile Red-throated Loon off Bay Shore Co. Pk. I first saw the bird around 3:00 pm but it was actively diving and I didn't get a good look at it for at least 20 min after originally seeing it. Several Horned Grebes kept me entertained while the Red-throated was diving. Three of the grebes came right up to the jetty. There was also a distant Common Loon in the area but I only saw it a couple of times. The Red-throated was present at least until 4:00 pm. At that point a boat returning to the dock scattered many of the waterfowl but I don't know if the Red-throated left or not. Bay Shore County Park is north of Green Bay off of US 57. Turn north (left if coming from Green Bay) on Bayshore Rd. about a mile northeast of the intersection of US 57 and CTH T. The Red-throated was northwest of the jetty/boat launch. There were quite few other birds on the bay including over 30 distant swans along the shore to the east of the boat launch.
