Last week was absolutely incredible here at Hawk Ridge. The worldwide Raptor Research Foundation (RRF) Conference was held in Duluth last week, and I got to meet so many raptor experts and biologists from around the world! It is always a pleasure meeting other people in the same field. Earlier in the week, I led a trip to Sax-Zim Bog for the conference. We had a great time! This past Sunday, I led my first trip to Crex Meadows in Grantsburg (northwestern WI). Crex Meadows is known for its Sandhill Crane flights; and we were not dissapointed in any way. The weather was gorgeous, the birds were phenomenal, and I got to meet some wonderful people (two of the birders were from Norway, one from Germany, one from Canada and one from the U.S.). Below are my photos from this past week. That bird is so pale and stunning :-) We've been getting great flights of Sharp-shinned Hawks recently, as well as most other raptor species (other than Broad-winged Hawks). It won't be long before Red-tailed Hawks, Bald & Golden Eagles, Northern Goshawk and Arctic Fluffballs (Rough-legged Hawks) become the most commonly-observed raptors on a day to day basis!
