Bird movement has been picking up here in Stevens Point. Today at Schmeekle Reserve (UWSP campus), I had 11 warbler species. Ordered from most to least abundant: Palm, Yellow-rumped, Yellow, Tennessee, Nashville, Ovenbird (2 heard only), Black-throated Green, Pine, Chestnut-sided, Black-and-white (only non-singing warbler species), and Northern Parula. Common Yellowthroat (12th warbler species) was seen yesterday at Iverson Park with the local Audubon group. Most of these species (except Yellow and Pine) were found in a loose wave in the northeastern part of the reserve. Other good birds for today included Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, possible Great-horned Owl, Ruby-crowned Kinglet (semi-late), and Gray-cheeked Thrush (FOY). Yesterday at Iverson Park, FOY birds seen include Great crested and Least Flycatchers, Blue-headed Vireo, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. The Audubon group also stopped by the Lost Creek wetlands. 6 shorebird species (excluding Spotted heard flying over Iverson). In order from most to least abundant: Lesser Yellowlegs, Short-billed Dowitcher (4), Killdeer, Wilson's Phalarope (2), Solitary Sandpiper, and an unidentified peep. Gerry Janz saw a Merlin there earlier yesterday. Good birding!
