Hello and Happy New Year, Yesterday was pretty boring, bird wise. But today was much more fun. I made a quick trip up to Lion's Den in Ozaukee County. Not much going on at all. I then drove north on HWY C to Port Washington. Lots of turkeys in the fields. The best part of the ride though was in the first corn field south of Port Washington where there was a dead deer carcass about 15 feet off the road. Eating the deer was a huge, immature Bald Eagle! I was able to get some really good looks at it because of its proximity to the road. Very cool and a great way to kick off 2011. The eagle was quite unimpressed with a tiny looking crow that tried to scare the eagle off. I think I saw it yawn at the crow. In Port Washington there were literally thousands of geese in the harbor along with a single Great Black Backed gull, a few Herring gulls, large numbers of common mergansers, a few red breasted and 2 hooded mergansers. The GBB Gull was probably about 50 yards from the "scope" on the walk, so it allowed for some nice views. Usually they seem to be on the break wall way out, but this one was swimming with the geese. I counted 15 ruddy ducks and a few goldeneye.
