I checked the main spots in Menasha this afternoon to see what was going on with the gulls and waterfowl. There remains an impressive number of gulls on Little Lake Butte des Morts plus the Jefferson Park location. Almost all of them are Herring---2500+, but on the lake north of the trestle there were the following in addition: 1 Thayer's (1st yr), 1 Iceland (2nd yr), 15+ Glaucous (mainly 1st yr with a few adults) and 5 Great Black-backed (3 ads with 2 younger birds). There were NO Ring-billed Gulls, as seems usual during most of the winter here. At Jefferson Park interesting finds included: 13 Trumpeter Swans, 3 Gadwalls (new), 2 Ring-necked Ducks, 1 Greater and 10+ Lesser Scaup, 1 Long-tailed Duck, 1 Bufflehead, and 10 Ruddy Ducks. There are about 1400 C. Goldeneyes and 700+ C. Mergansers between this site and Little Lake. Also at James Island 25-30 Cormorants continue to winter.
