Since we couldn't make it to the WSO trip this morning, while Margaret was battling the zombie effects of her allergy meds, I joined the Warbler - Walk at Maywood Park lead by Scott Baughman. We had quite a few FOY birds- Balt. Oriole, Nashville Warb, N. Waterthrush, Lincoln's Sparrow, Palm Warb. Black-thr. Green Warb. as well as good looks at repeat birds . After the walk was over I drove down to North Point to see if anything had come in overnight. YES. Aside from the dozens of beautiful Caspian and Forster's Terns there were 12 Willets and 2 breeding plumaged Ruddy Turnstones. I called Scott Baughman, who jumped on his bike to add these species to his BIGBY list, and I raced home to pick up Margaret, just home after organ-practice, whose only words were "Just throw me in bed- the Claritin hasn't worn off yet." O.K. If you don't want to see Turnstones and Willets, I said. With that, her eyes opened wide and she said "Let's go" so in 3 minutes we were down on North Point. A few minutes later Scott joined us and we all got to see the shorebirds as well as our FOY chimney swift and a probable imm. Peregrine in the distance. Then we went up to the top of the hill on the "point" and birded a small patch of woods which can be good for passerines. We heard and saw towhees, thrashers, and WT& WC sparrows and other common birds, when Margaret spotted a Brown Thrasher on a tree limb and just behind it a Northern Mockingbird feeding on the ground, on the lawn of a home on the other side of our patch of woods. All 3 of us got good looks at it while it was on the lawn, and after Scott left for home , Margaret and I walked around the trees and started walking up the home-owners driveway to ask if we could walk on their lawn to see the bird at closer range. But as soon as we started up the drive, the N. Mockingbird flew from it's perch on a metal fire-pit straight towards us and perched in a small tree, giving us even better looks at the bird in flight. Now, if only the next 30 days of May are as great as the first!
