I went to Manitowoc County this afternoon in the light rain. My first stop
was on Quarry Road, north of STH151 and south of Collins Marsh where godwits
have been seen recently. I didn't see any, but saw about 70 Dunlin, 3
Wilson's Phalaropes, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, 8 Least Sandpipers, a Pectoral
Sandpiper, and Spotted Sandpipers.
When I got to Manitowoc, I thought the rain was light enough that I might be
able to see something, and I met Chuck Sontag as he was walking out of the
impoundment. He said he thought the lousy weather should have brought in
more birds, but that a family of Peregrines had been hunting in the
impoundment. He reported Ruddy Turnstone, Dunlin, and Caspian, Common, and
Forster's Terns. I saw those birds and then continued out toward the
lighthouse but stopped before walking the narrow pier all the way out. On my
return while I was watching the Dunlin, a Whimbrel and Marbled Godwit flew
in and landed nearby. They were friends, I guess, because they followed each
other around. There were also 15 White Pelicans inside the impoundment.
Not a bad birding afternoon, considering the crummy weather (or perhaps
because of it!).
