Hi Evan - The smaller goose is not a Cackler - most likely a Lesser Canada. A Cackling Goose would have a very short, stubby bill and steep forehead (and a shorter neck.) This is something that trips a lot of folks up - you can't just look at size, since some of the Cackling Goose subspecies can be as large or larger than some of the smallest Canada Goose subspecies. You have to look at the morphological differences, as well. In the past, I've posted a link to a pretty good Cackling Goose ID page, but I carelessly forgot to bookmark said link myself (D'oh!) A Google search should turn some good ones up - the one I think most useful was done by someone in Colorado.
