Bird Conservation Through the Eyes of a Baltimore Oriole The November 17th meeting of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club will feature speaker Andy Paulios, Coordinator of the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative (WBCI) since 2002 for the Wisconsin DNR. Andy’s talk will tell the story of a Baltimore Oriole. He will use that story to help the audience understand how WBCI partners have changed their bird conservation approach to think about working across the full life-cycle of migratory birds. WBCI is an impressive project that acts as a clearinghouse and coordinating center for statewide research and education on birdlife. It encourage citizen scientists to keep their eyes and ears attuned to the outdoors, to make solid, regular outdoor observations, to engage in scientific exploration and to record those results in ways that are useful for making decisions. There is a great need to encourage amateur scientists to keep finding and using their natural curiosity about the world of nature that surrounds them. He will highlight some exciting new partner efforts and end with some ways people, especially the bird club members, can get involved. Andy has been birding since he was a little kid growing up in Rochester, MN. He received his BA from Luther College and MS degree from UW Green Bay. He is motivated by all things with feathers. Much of his childhood was spent identifying waterfowl and other marsh birds along the Mississippi River south of Wabasha MN. Andy spends most of his time watching birds or thinking about bird conservation. Currently his favorite bird is the Magnolia Warbler, but he's partial to just about anything with feathers. He lives in McFarland, WI with his wife, two kids, and dog, Buster. He has a great sense of humor, which will make his presentation enjoyable to all. This meeting will be held on the 3rd Thursday of November(the 17th) at 7:00 PM at the Horicon Marsh International Education Center on Hwy 28, north of Horicon. The public is welcome.
