We just counted 1,085 tundra swans at Goose Pond Sanctuary in Columbia
County. We also counted 10% of the swans were young of the year. This may
be a record number of tundra swans for Goose Pond.
Also present are about 100 snow geese, some white fronts, around 2,500
Canada geese, and maybe 3,000 mallards. Around 110 sandhill cranes are
also present. The birds should be present until a hard freeze.
Please remember when visiting Goose Pond to use your car as a blind.
Recently we had a photographer with a big lens walking around the pond to
get closer photographs. We also had a drone flying over the pond and
scaring the birds. If you see people off the road or using a drone please
kindly ask them to stay on the road or put their drone away. You can also
