The weather was beautiful, the woods was lovely dark and deep but in the Headwaters Wilderness (aka Pine River area east of Three Lakes) there were very few birds active on Friday: Ruffed Grouse at dawn. C. Redpolls at many stops but otherwise only BC Chickadees. Alvin was busy with P. Siskins and C. Redpolls but no Evening Grosbeaks. I had an ice fishing promise to keep so after birding all day on Friday I headed to Lac Vieux Desert. On my return Sunday I finally after four years of searching in all seasons found two BOREAL CHICKADEEs roadside at the big bog just west of the intersection of Giant Pine Rd and Pine River Rd. This is very near where Mike D reported them on Saturday. It was a thrill watching these little guys feeding in the tamaracks. Crows and Raven were present along Pine River Rd. and at the river crossing there were B. Creeper and Hairy Woodpecker. But no other boreal birds. Alvin again was without Evening Grosbeaks.
