There were several groups working on the Fond du Lac County May Count today. I'm not sure what the grand total might be for everyone (as Jeff Baughman is the compiler), but I'm guessing it may end up about average. It was my impression that the overall migration was fairly slow today -- much slower than I thought it would be -- with relatively few migrant warblers around. I ended up with 22 species, but missed many that I might normally expect -- had zero Blackburnian, Cape May, Bay-breast, Blackpoll & No. Parula -- and many of the other species that I DID manage to find totaled only 1 or 2 individuals for the day (including Yellow-rumps). Still, it was nice to find Ceruleans, Hoodeds, and a couple of Black-throated Blues. Most frustrating was birding along Hwy. 49 at Horicon Marsh, where only the portion NORTH of the highway is Fond du Lac County -- and all the birders (including Peter Fissel and his group) were looking SOUTH of the road, to where all the GOOD BIRDS were! It seemed like there were about a dozen species that were missing from our side of the highway, including the TWO ibis species and the many great shorebirds... Just too much high water on the north side... Oh, well... Despite that, I managed to find 136 species in Fond du Lac County for the day -- even though there were several "easy" birds that were missed (like Ring-necked Pheasant!). And I could find no "empid" flycatchers, with the exception of Least. All in all, it was a great day to be out birding, with very little wind, and the temperature about perfect.
