After a three month +/- absence, I just caught glimpse of a single EC Dove gobbling down sunflowers from a relatively small dish feeder in the yard. It is quite light colored, suggesting a youngster. From a colony of up to thirteen birds three years ago, this individual's appearance comes as a surprise. Tho non-native, I've enjoyed the EC's as they seem fairly benign, relating well with other species. Of course, the influx of the not-so welcome E. House Sparrows has been a stunning challenge this year. I counted well over 60 today as they fed on ground feed put down early this a.m. to benefit the mourning doves, juncos and cardinals primarily. Trade-offs, I guess. I was surprised to read of Cathy D's monofilament issue, and have had no similar experience here. Loose, lightweight, and fairly short lines have successfully kept the sparrows at bay, affording house and purple finch as well as goldfinch, cardinals and chickadees a more comfortable meal. Two bluejays remain and stop by to fight the squirrels for peanuts. And the 3 common species of woodpeckers are happily using the two sided feeder recommended on this site this year. Had a flyover flock of a dozen or so White Winged Crossbills last week. First 2012 bird here in the yard was a female cardinal.
