Several folks e-mailed me asking for directions - Obtain a general map of S. Kettle Moraine Forest from DNR website and then go to the west side of John Muir Bike Trail system: Park at the Oleson Log Cabin along Duffin Road. Walk in on the Lime Kiln Trail as it heads directly to the east. It will cross the horse trail (marked w/ orange blaze) and then continue until it meets the Ice Age Trail (which has a yellow marker). It will run concurrently with the IAT for a brief time and then the path becomes narrow as it sneaks into the woods to connect you with the actual John Muir trail system (dirt paths). Listen in that area for the Kentucky Warbler (rolling "churry-churry-churry" that should stick out like a sore thumb vs. the Ovenbirds in the area) and continue following the Lime Kiln Trail on your left to explore and listen further. This is the 4th year the bird has been here (or it's offspring?), so just let it sing & DON'T PLAY TAPES!!! Warblers along the walk should include: Blue-winged, Common Yellowthroat, Ovenbird, Black-thr Green, Mourning, Hooded, Pine, and Chestnut-sided. Further down Duffin Road is roadside parking for the Ice Age Trail as it works through the LaGrange Oak Woods & heads to Lake LaGrange and on to Hwy 12. It is a fantastic walk that can produce tons of species due to the variety of habitat in the couple mile long walk. Warblers that you could add to my other list in this area are Yellow, Cerulean, Black-and-White, & American Redstart. Have fun exploring!
