This afternoon I saw at least 3 Black-necked Stilts north of Ledge Road at
Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. This was not an ideal sighting due to the
very long distance and air distortion. A good scope is absolutely necessary. I
saw them from my vehicle while parked at the water control structure on the
north side of Ledge Road (there are two blue plastic barrels in the water
there). The birds were over 1/4 mile away on a long vegetated reef. There was a
great variety of waterfowl here, but as mentioned, distance and air distortion
make viewing difficult.
From Ledge and Point Roads I was able to see my FOY American White Pelicans
(36).
I am aware that 2 Eurasian Wigeons are being seen from the elevated viewing
structure along the Auto Tour boardwalk. I did not arrive until after 1 P.M.
and the autotour was extremely busy with vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and
the boardwalk parking lot was overflowing. I thought it would be difficult to
keep 6 feet away from people on the boardwalk, so I just kept on driving. This
might be a good opportunity for those who get up early to bird, but please stay
safe.
