Otto's pictures show the bird to have a long heavy yellowish bill and the
head has a slightly crested appearance. Looks great for Summer Tanager.

Are you sure it was not a female scarlet tanager, which is more
yellow-green compared to a female summer tanager that is more yellow
orange? Marilyn D

Saturday November 21, 2015

I'm posting this for Otto Gockman who found a Summer Tanager in Lake
Nebagamon, Douglas County, WI. The bird was present as of 2:15pm this
afternoon. The tanager which appears to be a female was observed feeding on
crabapples adjacent to the dentist office at 6881 S Lake Ave. (address from
Google Maps). The bird hung low in the trees and spooked easily. There was
a large mixed flock of Bohemian and Cedar Waxwings in these trees as well.
The bird was comparable in size to the Waxwings, was drab yellow/olive in
color with a large yellow bill.

Otto filed out an eBird checklist but am unable to post photos at this
time (but he will tomorrow night). The photos he took were ok since they
were poorly digiscoped, with his phone through his binoculars, but should
confirm the ID. If anyone wants photos they can email Otto at (
ogockman@xxxxxxxxx) and he can pass them along.
