Took a couple of my boys for a ride along our local waterway. With our return of January weather, the open water has decreased considerably concentrating remaining birds for easier viewing... Thousand Islands, Kaukauna-64 Bald Eagles by Thilmany Mill, 4 more by the Nature Center. At least 500 Common Mergansers as well as the usual waterfowl. River is completely iced up to the north. Combined Locks-3 Bald Eagles and two Double-crested Cormorants which looked perfectly healthy. Not sure why they are still around. Mostly Mallards there. Kimberly-5 Bald Eagles near Sunset Park. Open water almost gone, three mergansers and a few Mallards. Teleulah Park, Appleton-6 Bald Eagles, all squabbling with each other and a flock of crows. Lawrence University-5 Bald Eagles, mostly on south side of river. Skipped the rest of downtown Appleton past Lawe St.Bridge. Lots of gulls, Mallards, and geese. Jefferson Park, Menasha-15 Bald Eagles, 13 were in the big Cottonwoods where the river meets Lake Winnebago. 2 more were standing on the edge of the ice. There has been some kind of die-off of bait fish there and hundreds of gulls were in the midst of a feeding frenzy. Other waterfowl were present, including Goldeneyes, Mallards, and Canada Geese, but anything else difficult to identify as the relatively warmer water from the river was forming a fairly thick mist as it hit the zero degree air. -- *Andrew Reimer* *Appleton (Darboy), Calumet County * ** #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
