raid 5,  I don't think this is a hardware issue.  I was wondering if it was
possible to tweak NT to handle larger directories.

RAID 1 or 5?  If 5, can you change to 1?

Maybe play with stripe sizing?

Guess you can't increase cache if it's embedded...
