I have built two AD domain controllers with integrated DNS. The AD dcpromo on the first DC created the DNS configuration. By default it created a zone called '.' and under that zone create further folders which held each part of my domain name hierarchy until the last folder which held the domain name.. I am not a DNS bod, but my guess here is that it is suggesting that this DNS server is responsible for the root and subsequent upper level namespaces?? lets say that this is a win2000 forest named myDomain.bigcompany.net which is joining another forest/DNS namespace called bigcompany.net. myDomain is effectively a tiny part of the already existing DNS namespace therefore I would want to configure my DNS servers to forward to the rest of the DNS namespaces DNS servers for records outside of the myDomain and also that the DNS server should not have the '.' namespace within its DNS zones??
